Worldschooling – A child’s point of view

I asked lots of worldschoolers what they think about worldschooling. Usually, when people talk about worldschooling they ask adults what they think. But I think it’s the kids you should ask – after all they’re the ones doing the schooling. So I asked these particular worldschoolers what they think. Here is what they said:

I’m 10 years old from England. I’ve been worldschooling for the past two and a half years.

What do you like about being a worldschooler?

I like that I can be more free with what I learn and I have more options.

What don’t you like about being a worldschooler?

I don’t get to see my friends as much, unless I Skype or Facetime them.

What is your favourite place?

Greece, I liked the food there, (especially moussaka!) and all the people were very lovely.

What is your least favourite place?

Prague, because it had really grey weather and the food was too meaty and greasy.

Where would you like to visit?

Hawaii, because it has lots of beaches and sounds really nice.

What do you like about being a worldschooler?

I get to travel and eat lots of yummy food.

What don’t you like about being a worldschooler?

I don’t get as much time with my dad and I don’t get to see my friends as much.

What is your favourite place?

Japan, because I like the food, culture and language.

What is your least favourite place?

Hong Kong, because there’s not much to do for kids.

Where would you like to visit?

Italy, because I want to live on a floating house and eat lots of pasta.

Meeting new friends.

I miss my friends in England.

What is your favourite place?

New Zealand because it’s hot but not too hot.

What is your least favourite place?

Morocco because it’s so hot.

Where would you like to visit?

China because it has Hello Kitty.

What don’t you like about being a worldschooler?

I don’t like going in planes or cars.

What is your favourite place?

Australia because they have really good pies.

What is your least favourite place?

Bali because it’s got loads of rubbish everywhere.

Where would you like to visit?

Italy because of the gelato and hot chocolate.

He is 11 years old from America. He’s been travelling for 3 years.

What do you like about being a worldschooler?

Travelling around the world, meeting new people and seeing new things. It’s better than sitting at the same desk all day, every day. That sounds HORRIBLE!

What don’t you like about being a worldschooler?

Some friends are not permanent. I haven’t talked to a couple of friends from first grade for a long time. Sometimes technology problems keep me from talking to friends.

What is your favourite place?

Texas, USA because so much of my family live there. I like to visit but I don’t want to live there.

What is your least favourite place?

Phu Quoc island, Vietnam. this is because the power kept going out. Either the internet or electricity was down every other day. And it rained and rained – it even flooded the house!

Where would you like to visit?

Colorado, USA because I want to see snow. My friends say it is very nice there in winter.

She is 13 years old from America. She has been travelling for 1 year.

What do you like about being a worldschooler?

I get to see a lot of the world and meet lots of interesting people.

What don’t you like about being a worldschooler?

I miss having my own house and having an area I’m familiar with.

What is your favourite place?

Wales because I like that they have a dragon on their flag and I like the cold and grey weather.

What is your least favourite place?

Indonesia because it’s chaotic and there are stray dogs everywhere.

Where would you like to visit?

Paris because i want to see the Eiffel Tower.

What do you like about being a worldschooler?

I get to see lots of different places.

What don’t you like about being a worldschooler?

It’s hard to make friends and leave them behind.

What is your favourite place?

Mexico because we stayed there for a long time, we got to see lots of Mexico and I made lots of friends there.

What is your least favourite place?

Indonesia because it’s chaotic.

Where would you like to visit?

Madagascar because I want to see lemurs.
